Questions About Different Shade Levels
Hey. I was looking through some material connected to hood use because I recently noticed that different welding jobs seem to require completely different lens settings. While reading, I compared a few sections about TIG, plasma cutting, and gas welding, and there were also separate recommendations based on amperage ranges. Later I stayed on lens shade chart for a while and checked the examples showing lighter and darker shade numbers for different arc strengths. I also saw notes about fixed lenses compared with auto-darkening filters and how visibility changes depending on brightness. Some of the lower settings surprised me because I expected stronger protection across almost every task. I am still not fully sure when people normally increase or reduce the shade level. Do most of you adjust the hood often or leave it close to the same setting most of the time?

I usually change it depending on the process and current. The comparisons between lower amperage work and heavier arc operations helped me understand why visibility matters as much as protection. I also found it useful that the examples covered cutting, brazing, and plasma tasks instead of focusing only on one type of welding. Before reading through similar charts, I assumed darker was always safer no matter what. After some trial and error, I realized extremely dark settings can make detailed work harder than necessary. The explanations about auto-darkening filters were probably the clearest part for me. It made adjusting things feel less random.
