So I’ve been knee-deep in a custom home automation setup (think motorized trap doors and hidden shelves) and I’m kinda stuck. There are just so many types of linear actuators out there — different forces, speeds, strokes, voltage, and all that. How do you even begin to choose the right one? I mean, I don’t want to overspend on power I won’t use, but I also don’t want the thing to fail on me in 2 months.

Totally get where you’re coming from choosing the right actuator can be overwhelming. I had the same issue with a hidden TV lift. Best advice: figure out your weight/load needs first, then match the stroke length and speed. Quality matters too don’t go cheap if it’s a moving part you’ll rely on. Kinda like when I was searching for book writing services in Canada, there were tons of options but only a few that really fit.
