I’m trying to simplify my living room setup and was wondering if anyone here uses their iPhone as a universal remote? I’ve got a Samsung TV, an old Roku box, and occasionally use my Apple TV too. Would love to ditch all the remotes piling up on my coffee table. Do these remote apps actually work reliably, or is it just another tech hassle waiting to happen?

I’ve actually been using my iPhone as a remote for a few months now, and it’s been surprisingly solid. I had the exact same issue—three remotes, all with dead batteries at the worst times. I switched to an app that turns the iPhone into a universal remote, and it controls my Samsung TV, Roku, and even my soundbar without a hitch. Setup was smoother than I expected, especially for the Samsung and Roku. Some older devices don’t respond as quickly, but for the most part, it’s been great.
What really helped was this tool I found that offers a dedicated TV remote app for iPhones: iPhone Universal Remote. It doesn’t require any extra hardware as long as your TV supports Wi-Fi or has built-in casting support. I use it mostly in the evenings, and I even programmed quick buttons for Netflix and YouTube. Bonus: no more remote battles with the kids because now I keep full control on my phone 😄
